"Sensing" Automotive Repair

You know your car better than anyone else. To you, it has this smell, feel, look, sound. Because you are so familiar with it, you know when something is wrong. Don't ignore the warning signs; use your senses and check your car frequently. Things to check for:

  • Unusual sounds, odors, drips, leaks, smoke, warning lights, gauge readings
  • Changes in acceleration, engine performance, gas mileage, fluid levels
  • Warn tires, belts, hoses
  • Problems in handling, braking, steering, vibrations

Then note:

  • When does it occur?
  • Is it constant or periodic?
  • Is the vehicle cold or has it warmed up?
  • At what speed? Acceleration? Braking? Shifting?
  • When did the problem first start?
